Looking Back

Posted in Uncategorized on May 22, 2008 by Greg

This project has helped me learn many things about group projects and working with others. I had to learn how to deal with lazy group members *Cough* *Cough* –no names mentioned–and being able to just worry about my effort and the end product. I also learned about how to research and prepare for crating and organizing a documentary. I learned film techniques and how to use a camera properly with all the accessories. I learned a lot about organizing and figuring out how to schedule time for my group to meet and work on our segment. The last major thing I learned was that I hate blogging.

Global Warming Time Line

Posted in Uncategorized on May 15, 2008 by Greg

This is exactly what the title says, a global warming time line. It has great information if you need to look up temperatures or weather patterns in the past and compare them to things going on today. The time line starts in the 1800’s and extends to April 2, 2008 and it has any major events that have happened within these dates. A fact i found interesting was that in the 1800’s there were 290 parts per million of carbon dioxide and in the year 2007 there were 382 parts per million of carbon dioxide.

Use this article if you need to figure out about what time certain things happened in global warming history.

Could We-Should We-Modify the Planet

James Trefil asks two questions in this article. They are:

1. “Does our present technology allow us to make large-scale changes in the climate?”

2. “What political, legal, and ethical considerations are involved?”

Trefil also mentions some ways we could counteract the green house effect and global warming. He speculates that if we could reflect a portion of the sun’s rays back into the atmosphere then there would be less heat to get trapped in our atmosphere and therefore less global warming. He also talked about using flocks of balloons and stratospheric dust to get the job done. Another focus of the article was reducing CO2 in the atmosphere. Trefil discussed the use of plankton that took in CO2 being stimulated by adding iron to the oceans. This would cause a swell in plankton population and they would absorb the CO@ into their bodies then when they die, fall down to the bottom of the ocean and bring the CO2 with them.

Trefil suggestions were out there but they were also very thought provoking. Some of the thing he mentioned would be large scale tasks that could potentially end up disastrous, but could also maybe help out with global warming. While they are cool, i don’t think many of them will ever go into play.

The Amicus Journal criticizes President Bush’s environmental policies and point out a lot of things he has done to negatively affect the world.  It displays a long laundry list of mistakes and slip up that the Bush administration has had including reducing regulations on arsenic in drinking after, building roads through endangered forests, refused to limit emissions on power plants, and many more.  Emissions went uip thirteen percent after Bush decided not to limit emissions.  The Amicus Journal discusses President Bush’s close ties with the energy and oil companies.

This article contained up to dat info on teh current political situation of global warming.  Unfortunatly it was very one sided and was mostly Bush bashing.  Once again, i don’t think global warming can be blamed on one sigle person.  It is impossible.

Plan For the Last Week of Working

Posted in Uncategorized on May 12, 2008 by Greg

We’re a little rushed and things are really coming down to the wire but I think we’ll finish our segment in time and it will look really nice. Next week there are only 2 class periods so my group will be meeting in lab on Tuesday and mostly likely Thursday as well. When we meet we need to work on loading all of our clips onto the computer first, then getting them in the right order. We also need to voice over and use the editing tools on our movie.

The Heat Is On

In this article Ralph Nader debates noted astrophysicist Sallie Baliunas on global warming. Nader insists that changes need to happen now to ensure the future of our world and the health of those inhabiting it. Nader warns of the flooding of low lying areas and coastal regions, a surge in human health problems, and loss of important ecosystems. He also says that making harsher regulations and working towards a “greener” nation is way over due. Nader says that humans and the way we live they lives are the leading cause of global warming.

Baliunas says that there is not enough evidence to support the claim that global warming is human induced. She says that global warming is a natural thing that happens as time goes on. Through out history there has been recorded changes in temperature as time goes on.

This article was great because it showed two opposing views on global warming. It had both sides speaking and sharing their thought in the same article so you could view them side by side and make an educated decision on where you stand.

Thesis statement for documentary and group

Posted in Uncategorized on May 5, 2008 by Greg

the main idea for my group, causes, will be something like this:

“Global warming is a problem in the world today. One reason that it has gotten so bad is because most people do not know the causes of this phenomenon. (Then segway into first visual metaphor)”

the thesis for the whole movie would be:

“Where have all the glaciers gone? You may have been hearing about global warming in the news or during your daily routine, and you probably have some questions. The population as a whole is very uneducated about global warming and their ignorance may be costing them. Come take a look and learn all that you can about global warming so that we can all work together to make sure our children’s, children can grow up in a world with a bright future.”

Global Warming: The Controversy Heats Up

Posted in Uncategorized on May 5, 2008 by Greg

This article, by Geoff Scott, talks about green house gases, global warming related flooding, the reality of Global warming, and health effects of global warming. Scott explains that greenhouse gases are a major cause of global warming because they keep the heat from escaping. While the health affects can not be determined for certain, it is thought that they would affect the elderly and the poor the most. They are the least able to cope with changes and would be the worst off. As the sea levels rise, water would become more scarce. The rising water from the ocean would contaminate the fresh water streams and rivers and the people that depended on them for water would have a problem.

Geoff Scoot raises some interesting points about the effects of global warming. He mentions things I’ve never seen before and never encountered in my research. This is a good article for researching the overall affects of global warming on the Earth as a whole.
